October 2011 Newsletter

Hi everyone!

Here is what is happening at the F.D. Campbell Library during the month of October:

Introducing the Evergreen Circulation System: The new circulation software and system were launched at the F.D. Campbell, New Castle and Ellwood City Libraries on Monday, September 25. We thank you for your continued patience with the staff as we familiarize ourselves and you with the new system. Some things to remember: Please be sure to have your library card with you, please return borrowed items on time, and clean up any delinquent fines or charges. Thank you!

"What's it to you?" Catch phrase contest - HAVE YOU ENTERED? The deadline is October 7. Get an entry form at the library. There is a $25 prize awarded, sponsored by First Commonwealth Bank.

The library will be closed on Monday, October 10 in honor of Columbus Day.

Special Story Time! October 12 at 10:30 AM, come and meet, read with and talk to a real Army soldier.

American Girl Club will be held on Thursday, October 13 at 6PM. IT is time for FALL fun - make a cool Halloween craft and enjoy a tasty fireside snack! Bring a friend and get an extra surprise! Call or stop in to register by October 10.

Have a hand in what happens in your library! The FD Campbell Friends of the Library will have their second meeting on Saturday, October 15 at 10AM. This is an organization for volunteers to work on ongoing projects,, discuss and implement ways to help the Library physically, monetarily, or in any way that works for the group and is in accordance with library policies.

Movie Night will be held Saturday, October 15 at 6:30PM at the BESSEMER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Due to technical difficulties in August, we were unable to watch the movie "Rio," which we will be viewing in October. Snacks and Admission are free so come on out to enjoy the show with us!

Book Club will meet on Tuesday, October 18 at 6:30PM. Join us for a lively discussion of One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus.

The Third Annual Bessemer Community Pumpkinfest is Saturday, October 22 from 9AM to 4PM. Stop by the library boot for pumpkin painting, crafts, stories read, and at 1PM, Storyteller Alan Irvine will tell spooky tales of Halloween.

The Library Board will meet on Monday, October 24 at 6:30PM.

Special Story Time on Wednesday, October 26 at 10:30AM. Stop by for Halloween stories, crafts, cookies and milk. Also please feel free to wear your Halloween Costume!

Manga Mania will meet on Wednesday, October 26 at 6PM.

"Learn to Draw", classes for any age, will be held on Saturdays, October 29, November 5, 12, & 19. Learn to draw a variety of objects and subjects with pencil, colored pencil and other media. REGISTER NOW AS SPACE IS LIMITED. Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, October 26. $10 fee covers all 4 classes and materials.

COMING SOON: Adult Computer Classes on Friday, November 4 and 18 at 10AM. These will cover computer basics and beginning interest in computers.

Newsletter - August 2011

Story Time continues to meet on Wednesdays at 10:30AM.

Join us for a presentation on what it's like to live and learn in Sierra Leone on Wednesday, August 10 at 6PM. Samuel Sesay works with Transformation Education and will present how the organization helps the citizens of Sierra Leone. Here's your chance to find out what it's like Across the World - another continent!!

The Reading Buddies program will continue to meet on Mondays and Thursdays at 3PM through August 11. There will be an ice cream party during the last half of the session on August 11.

The American Girl Club will meet on Thursday, August 11 at 6PM.

The next Bessemer Community Movie Night will be held on August 19 at 9PM at Kennedy Park. We will be showing "Rio the Movie." Admission and refreshments are free. Bring a chair, a blanket, and the family. The rain date for the event is August 26.

The library board will meet on August 29 at 6:30PM.

Manga Mania 101 will be held on Wednesday, August 31 at 6PM.

SUMMER READING... Mohawk High School students - the selections for your summer reading are available. If you haven't read your books for the August book discussion, come and get 'em!

LITTLE KIDS... Summer reading is winding down but don't stop reading! Remember to bring your reading charts with you when you come to the Library - you've still got time to keep earning cool prizes.

ON HIATUS.... The computer classes and book discussion groups will take a break during the month of August. They will resume in September.

Let us know what computer skills you might be interested to learn, including: Library resources/database searching, PowerPoint, Exploring Windows, Basic Internet, Beginning Word Processing, Advanced Word Processing, Social Networking and Communications.

COMING SOON... The F.D. Campbell Library has been selected, along with the new Castle and Ellwood City Libraries, to be a pilot for the new circulation system to be implemented this fall. We are very excited and honored to be chosen by the state and invite you to share the anticipation with us! As with any transition, there will be questions, quirks, and quandaries, but we hope to keep them to a minimum as we go through training and complete the migration. As the process continues, being sure to have your library card with you, returning borrowed items on time, and cleaning up any delinquent fines/charges will be extremely helpful for a smooth transition.

Teen Advisory Board - an organization for teens to discuss constructive Teen programming, ways to help the Library and more.

Friends of the Library - an organization for volunteers to work on ongoing projects, discuss, and implement ways to help the Library, physically, monetarily or in any way that works for the group and is accordance with Library policies.

July 2011 Newsletter

Hi everyone,

Here is what is going on at the F.D. Campbell Library in the month of July!

Story Time - every Wednesday morning at 10:30 AM

Reading Buddy Program - the buddies are matched up. They will meet on Mondays and Thursdays, July 7, 11, 14, 18, 21, 25 & 28 from 3PM to 4PM.

The F.D. Campbell Library will be closed on Monday, July 4 in honor of the Independence Day holiday.

Etiquette seminar - Thursday, July 7 @ 1PM - for young (school age) ladies, presented by Michele Goodman-Jones with IMAGE Workshops. A fun, interactive presentation of proper manners to apply to a variety of situations: dinner, sleepovers, friendships, talking, sitting and much more. Each participant receives take-away information and a FREE GIFT! PRE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED... A $5 refundable* fee is required upon registration to hold your spot. (*fee will be refunded upon completion or the class).

Computer Classes will continue from 10AM-11AM on Mondays, July 11, 18 & 25. Public computer use will be limited during this hour each day to accommodate the students. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

The American Girl club will meet on Thursday, July 14 at 6PM.

The F.D. Campbell Library, in conjunction with the Bessemer Presbyterian Church will host our monthly movie night OUTDOORS at Kennedy Park in Bessemer on Friday, July 15th at 9PM. We will show "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules". Admission and snacks are FREE. Bring a chair, a blanket, and the family!! (Rain Date - July 22)

On Monday, July 18th, Jameson Health System will host an Osteoporosis Seminar here at 1PM.

On Tuesday, July 19th, the Book Discussion Group will meet at 6:30PM. They are reading The Little Book by Sheldon Edwards.

The cultural events continue... On Wednesday, July 20th, Missionary Debbie Blaine will be here to talk about her captivating true stories and experiences in the nation of Sudan. Stay after and enjoy the Ice-cream Social.

"Manga Mainia" will be held on Wednesday, July 27 at 6PM.

The Book Sale will be held during the Bessemer Community Days, on Saturday, July 30 from 9AM to 3PM. Pick up some great reads at cool prices and support your library. The Book Sale will be located in the garage behind the library.

HELP WANTED - Anyone willing to work on a Library float for the parade on Community Day, Saturday, July 30... please let us know ASAP.

Hi everyone!

Here is what is happening this month at F. D.Campbell Library.

Adult computer classes will be held on June 6, 13, 20, and 27 from 10AM to 11AM. Public computer use will be limited during this hour each day to accommodate the students. Please adjust your schedule accordingly. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and consideration for those seeking to learn new computer skills.

Story time is still held every Wednesday at 10:30AM. We are reading various cultural stories as a part of summer reading program. We also have fun crafts and songs to go with our story.

The American Girl club will meet Thursday, June 9 at 6:00PM. Join us for Girl talk, crafts, stories... all school age girls welcome.


The Cultural Cooking Exchange
will be held on Wednesday, June 15 at 1:00PM. Cook your favorite dish from your cultural heritage. Bring it to the library to share with others. Bring a copy of your recipe to share. Please call or stop in to pre-register. Table service will be provided to sample.

Community Movie Night will be held on Friday, June 17 at 9:00PM at Kennedy Park in Bessemer on the outdoor big screen. Come see Gnomeo and Juliet in cooperation with the Bessemer Presbyterian Church. Free admission and refreshments. If the event should be rained out, it will be held on June 24.

The Book Discussion Group will meet on Tuesday, June 21 at 6:30PM.

Hey teens! Join us for Manga Mania on Wednesday, June 29 at 6PM. Share your favorite series, learn about some new ones, watch some episodes, find out the latest!

Storyteller H. Noreen Bobersky will be here to share the story of "Anansi the Spider" on Thursday, June 30 at 1PM. There will be a participatory puppet show, grafts, giggles, and fun! Please call or stop in to Pre-register for the event. Be prepared to be outside, weather permitting.

Get ready to buddy up! The reading buddy program begins with orientation on June 13 at 6PM for the teens and 6:30PM for the children. The first reading meeting will be on June 16 at 3PM.

*Jr. High Spring Dance – Sunday, May 15 @ 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Bessemer Croatian Club. Cost is $6/person at the Library or at the Door. It’s Spring Fling time again! Dress up, bring your friends, dance, eat, and socialize!

*Movie Night! – Saturday, May 21 @ 6:30 – Come see Secretariat shown in cooperation with and at the Bessemer Presbyterian Church. Free admission and refreshments!

The library and the Presbyterian Church are planning to co-host outdoor movie nights at Kennedy Park during the summer. Stay tuned for more information!

Family Game Night – Thursday, March 24 @ 6 PM – Bring your family, a board game, a card game, any game… or play the library’s games. Munchies provided.

February 2011 Newsletter


Schedule of Activities:
  • Junior High Valentine Dance – Saturday, February 5 from 3:30 – 7 PM – to be held at the Bessemer Croatian Club. Watch for more information and ticket sales at Mohawk School.
  • Family Jammie Story Time Monday, February 14 @ 6 PM – Share the LOVE of reading with bedtime stories, a craft, and a snack. Kiddos, grab your big people, wear your cozy clothes (or even your jammies!) and come to a family story time complete with bedtime stories, a craft, and a snack. Please register by Friday, February 11, 2011 – this is a FREE event, but we want to have enough supplies and snacks for everyone. Favorite pillows, blankies, and bedtime pals welcome too!
  • Story Time – Wednesdays @ 10:30 AM – Read, sing, play, create!
  • Book Discussion Group – Tuesday, February 15 @ 6:30 PM – The group is reading The Fire Watcher.
  • Movie Night! Saturday, February 19 @ 6:30 – Come see Despicable Me. This movie will be shown in cooperation with and at the Bessemer Presbyterian Church. Free admission and refreshments!
  • LIBRARY CLOSED - Monday, February 21, 2011 in honor of President’s Day
  • Family Game NightMonday, February 28 @ 6 PM – Bring your family, a board game, a card game, any game… or play the library’s games. Light snacks provided.
  • Library Board Meeting - Monday, February 28 @ 6:30 PM.

Most IRS and PA Tax forms are available now. As a “tax form outlet”, the library has the forms. The library does not offer tax help or advice, just the tax forms. You can also access forms and instructions online at IRS.gov. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is available to certain individuals. Check the IRS.gov website for site listings.


Looking AheadBelieve it or not, summer will be here before we know it! The summer reading program slogan will be “One World, Many Stories” which leaves the “book” wide open for possibilities of all sorts of cultural activities. We’re looking for individuals or groups who would be willing to share stories, crafts, displays, music, language or any other activities for programs here at the library this summer. Here’s your chance to get involved, share your experience and wisdom, and make a difference!
